02Design

We spent forty-three years taking things away.

The body is a single grown crystal. Not milled from a block, not pressed together from parts. Grown, the way a snowflake is grown, in a chamber the size of a room over eleven days.

There are no seams because there is nothing to seam. No screws, no adhesive, no gasket, no antenna line. Turn it over in your hand and you will not find a single place where one thing meets another thing.

It is the first iPhone with a parts count of one.

03Display

The whole thing is the display.

Both faces. Every edge. The curve where your fingers wrap around it. There is no front and no back, only the side you happen to be looking at — the other one is asleep.

At 2,400 pixels per inch you have run out of retina. Put a printed page beside it and the page is the one that looks low resolution.

In direct sun it reaches 8,000 nits. At 3am it will go down to a single nit, the brightness of a distant candle, so it never wakes the person next to you.

04Intelligence

It knows when to leave you alone.

Every model runs on the device. Nothing you say, write, photograph or search leaves the glass unless you send it somewhere yourself. There is no server to trust because there is no server.

It reads the room the way a good assistant does. In a conversation it stays dark. On a run it speaks. Handed to a child it becomes a different phone entirely, and hands itself back when the child is done.

Notifications are off by default. You turn on the four or five that earn it.

It has never once been plugged in.

The same crystal that shows you the picture also collects the light that fell on it. Daylight through a window, the lamp on your desk, the sun on a walk to lunch. It takes power from the room the way a plant does.

What it cannot gather from light it takes from motion and from the ambient radio already passing through you right now.

The charger is sold separately. There is no charger.

Made out of the one you already own.

Hand us your old iPhone and we grow the next one from it. The silicon, the rare earths, the gold in the board — all of it goes back into the chamber. Nothing new comes out of the ground for this product.

When you are finished with it, in ten or twenty years, it goes back in again. The line has been closed since 2041.
